Alarm Clock Rock

October 16, 2006

Last Friday, Gallivanter asked me: “Can one hug oneself?“. My answer was YES. I told him that I hug myself all the time at yoga.

Whether you’re a total beginner or a yoga enthusiast, I’m going to share with you one simple pose that you can do before you get out of bed every morning.

All you need to do is to hug yourself affectionately and laugh heartily – then like the ‘child’ you are inside, rock on up to sit!

Sometimes a little half-somersault action can be quite nice, not only giving yourself a nice back massage, but also letting yourself into some version of a little ball, then inhale as you rock forward and exhale as you rock back.

You might enjoy doing this nice and slow, allowing it to be breath-connecting. Or you could try speeding things up, getting a little ‘rock and roll’ spirit into it. When you are ready, you can rock up to sit comfortably. It’s fun to let the momentum take you right up into the cross-legged seat if that feels good, but you can always choose to roll to your side and use your hands to sit uptight.

Benefits: Rocking invigorates the body and provides a light massage while toning the belly. Plus hugging yourself gives the back a nice stretch. And last but not least, it’s FUN!

Thank you for clearing that up for me Jemima. *HUGS ONESELF* Hehehehe!

    Anytime, Dan. 😉

Word of caution to those who are reading this entry, if you do decide to hug yourself in public, make sure your back is facing the “audience”, so people may think that you’re actually hugging someone… 😉

    Hahaha.. 😆

Yoga … Is hard. And it require lots of practice.

That was what I thought when I first started yoga. Like everything else, practice makes perfect. 🙂

Yes, I believe that we can hug ourselves because there are times when we only need ourselves; especially during ME-time.

    That’s true. 😉

    Have a good day.

    Same to you, Kyels. 😀

My favourite post in yoga is the child’s pose.

I find child pose very relaxing – especially after a hard day’s work. 🙂

I don’t have to worry about balance and I dont end up toppling over setting a spiral of topplers in the class.

    Hahaha.. 😆
